If you want to install LAME codec, you need to download either LAME ACM codec:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_ACM_Codec.htm
or LAME Directshow filter:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/LAME_Directshow_filter.htm
or preferably both. Follow the installation instructions on the pages, unless you're doing something more complicated.
And an excellent codec, all needed components available too! :)

Everybody knows that LAME isn't the best, or the fastest audio encoder because the technology is old, and there is little room for improvement nowadays. But It's the most popular in the world, simply becouse *.mp3 is the de facto standart for lossy(compressed) audio. Of course there are such encs like Ogg Vorbis(aotuv) and AAC(from Apple), but Apple's isn't free (like LAME for instance) and Ogg is not so popular. Perhaps in time the lossles formats will become the choice of the mainstream user (assuming the tendency for larger capacity storage media continues to expand).

this rating is for the 3.98.2 overall, not this specific. just wanted to clarify there's nothing wrong with 3.98r (as its work name is), its actual amazing n i cannot see why scene still hold on to .97. however, should be mentioned that to work w/ ie. Exact Audio Copy u need the lame3.98.2-vc6.zip (from RAREwarez), since the verison deriving from latest compiler seem to malfunction with ie. EAC.
Admin's Note: The version you mentioned (lame3.98.2-vc6.zip - from RareWares) is a "bundle compiled with VC6/Intel Compiler 9.1 - intended for older Windows OSes."

I have build a classic lame_enc.dll v3.98.2, everything included with the latest version and I also used the fastest compilers on the planet.
Get it here and test it with your favorite encoder, it works with CDex, VirtualDub, etc:

Just overwrite your LAME_ENC.DLL with this one.

used to have 3.97, worked great with virtualdub. downloaded 3.98.2. can't install it, now virtualdub don't recognize lame at all. pretty much useless without instructions

Hi guys. There is no installation at all. You must go to the DOS prompt and type a line like:
g:\lame98\lame.exe -h -V 4 g:\wavfiles\track01.wav g:\destinationfiles\track01.mp3
and it works.
Or you can try a frontend program like RazorLame; or you can have the WON-DER-FUL Foobar player, tell it where the lame.exe is, and tell it you want to convert the files in the playlist.

Stupid question:
How do I install it after downloading and unzipping? When I click the lame.exe - there´s just a quick blink and nothing happens.

The louder the opinion, the less fact behind it. The subtle points are mostly well taken, the screaming THIS IS BEST! posts invariably wrong at the core.
Legally, using LAME is like patronizing a speakeasy. Using WMA is like having a breath tester installed on your car. It's your choice, but sound quality is pretty low down the priority tree.

It's easy to use with a front-end and versatile, and not to mention free. But it would be great if there would be a easy switch to cut songs between frames/time indexes (additional options could also be added later, with newer versions) - or could anyone suggest another easy application?

LAME is the only codec that ain't useless in many applications at once. It suits best for the most purposes and offers the best sound quality ever. I think, the stereo sound produced by LAME, has the quality/size ratio the highest. While in doubt, compare waveforms visually.

I have tested Lame mp3,itunes 7 AAC, Wma Pro and Ogg.
Itunes AAC with Vbr is the best audio codec.
Sometimes even 320kbs is not enough for lame.
Its quite obvious that MP3 format technology is old.

I have used Lame 3.96 as the encoding engine for my C# program MGrip.exe for many years now. I have experimented with various other encodong engines from time to time and have always returned to Lame 3.96. I have come to this page as I wanted to look into updates of lame_enc.dll from 3.96 but from what I see I find no reason to fix what ain't broke.

For some of you that think that you know about sound then you may be wrong by saying otherwise than LAME is the best mp3 encoder that exist to this day! Fraunhofer is a very good encoder though @128kbps possibly sounds better than lame in some occasions but rarely. Overall LAME beats every mp3 encoder at almost any rate.
Stick with this one as every one that truly knows about sound will agree with this.

Lynx_TWO,that wma problem that you said maybe because of auto volume leveling being turned on.i also was not satistfied with wma wolume that slow down when high sound part in wma.if you turn off the auto volume leveling,the wma should sound okay and its volume as loud mp3

hi,yesterday i rip my metallica cd to cbr 160kbps mp3 using itunes 7.0.1.8,the sound quality really good! no clicks or pops unlike many people said.maybe many people fooled by arguments over old version of itunes that really have bad mp3 encoder.the lastest one have good mp3 encoder.always update to the latest one.itunes use \"smart encoding adjustment\" to maximize mp3 quality
so peoples,use itunes instead of lame,it really good! if you don\'t believe me,try it yourself

In reply to AKIRA's post, yes WMA is a decent format, but it has some high frequency issues that tend to fatige the average listeners's ears over time. MP3 sounds much more liquid and organic than WMA, which by comparison sounds very digital and harsh. Besides, if you are looking for sheer quality, go with ogg vorbis or better yet a lossless format like Monkey's Audio, FLAC, Apple Lossless, Wavepack, OptimFrog, or any of the other numerous mathematically lossless formats available.

THE BEST! mp3 encoder this side of the universe.
For superb quality mp3's head to rarewares.org,grab the latest speedy compile of LAME 3.98a6,download CDEX/Audiograbber as ripper software,put the lame_enc.dll in the directory of the rippers and choose Variable Bitrate,Method New,VBR 2,Joint Stereo...your mp3's will be around 224kbps but the quality i promise you is excellent!
Kudos to developers for proving that LAME encoded mp3's still provide excellent quality and best compatibility compared to more recent codecs like Mpeg4-AAC,Ogg Vorbis.

sorry,that version is bad,use the recommended 3.97 beta 2 version.
i always rip to lame's mp3 by winamp (make sure the lastest version.my recommended VBR settings are:
VBR Minimum Bitrate:32 (change manually)
VBR Maximum Bitrate:128 (change manually)
Quality:alt-preset-extreme
VBR Q:0(change manually)
note:don't alt-preset-fast extreme.although it's faster but it's a little bit worse than alt-preset-extreme.you can notice it especially if you listen your mp3 with windows media player with maximum srs wow effect and you have very good listening and good headphone.
some peoples said fraunhofer (fhg) mp3 is better than lame at equal bitrate.that is true to all lame preset except extreme preset and insane preset.so lame still the winner in most situation.that why i recommend you use extreme preset.

You think this is best encoder? How could you boy? Sound is lifeless! Take fraunhofer radium codec: www.audioactive .com instead. However this codec has showed a great period of time. Since '96. This is a masterpiece.

No doubt about it, lame is the highest quality encoder. For the longest time, I used BLADE ENC at 256kbps. But a friend switched me over and I swear I can tell no difference from a 320kbps MP3 encoded w/ LAME to the original audio cd. Apple should ditch their useless AAC and opt for MP3's encoded with lame. The highest quality I've yet to come across, next to lossless, of course.

lame is a good encoder.
But there is some problem while I encoding mp3 file wit lame.
the genre list is not the same with the document "id3.html".
While I use the genre with lame ,it showed error such as :
Unknown genre: 'Alternative Rock'. Specify genre name or number
But use some mp3 player such as foobar2000,I found that it use the genre list from "id3.html".
so which genre list is standard ?
